Romeos (English Subtitled)

ROMEOS: A 'No Apologies' Kind of Movie!
Wow. Romeos moved me in so many ways that I feel...speechless. It's been a long time since I watched something that made the tiny hairs on my arms stand on edge. Moved to tears not only because of the performances (although they were extremely good) but because...finally someone has come along and made a movie so brutally honest, without apologies, on a topic that so many people are ignorant about. And we all know what happens when people are ignorant. Ignorance leads to fear and fear leads to blind hatred. That ignorance, fear, and hatred is what kills our youth, whether its from suicide or bashing.

Romeos was one of the movies I actually paid to see at last years 2011 Philadelphia Q-Fest. And guess what? When my mom and I got to the theater and were standing in line, we found out that something was wrong with the film equipment, therefore, we could either get a refund or come back tomorrow. Well, I had work the next day and I live about a good 40 mins from Philadelphia,...

An enjoyable film...
Romeos is one of those rare gems that tugs at your heart strings and makes you cheer for the hero of the film. This movie has a lot of heart and soul. It was funny at times yet serious all the same with a very relatable subject matter to those going through what the main character is going through of a person trapped in the wrong body finding his place in the world and all the while searching for acceptance from the people around him and from within.

Rick Okon, who plays the brave and rebellious Lukas, a gay trans man who is transioning from female to male, is simply amazing. He played the character with such realism and truth that I couldn't take my eyes off of him, more so than the object of Luka's attraction, Fabio, the closetted bad boy played by Maximilian Befort, who was amazing as well in the film. The other actor who stood out in the film for me was Liv Lisa Fries, who played Lukas lesbian BFF -Ine, who had to accept her childhood friend transformation from a girl...

Excellent film.
OMG this is a great movie. Guaranteed to make you laugh and cry and just say to yourself WOW. I love the German gay interest movies. Always a treat. The story is excellently written and acted. The main characters give it their all especially Rick Okon who is just amazing. Well worth the money. You will watch it over again.

Not Without Honour

The first Masterpiece Theatre Show
The show that started Masterpiece Theatre and shows like Downton Abbey. Margaret Tyzack is always a delight and this is a performance by her before I, Claudius.

Churchills
It is ok but seems a little phoney or maybe it just was the times.
Wigs could have been better...costumes were better than the wigs.....too feminine.

The Invisible Man [Blu-ray]

Invisibly Yours...
THE INVISIBLE MAN- Claude Rains is awesome as the man whose invisibility serum slowly rots his brain. Hunted by police, he sets out to cure himself and get revenge on the man who betrayed him. Excellent stuff! Check out the running pair of pants scene! THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS- has Vincent Price as a man on death row, framed for a murder he did not commit. He gets some help in the form of the invisibilty serum and simply walks out of prison! Can he prove his innocense and find the real killer before te serum drives him mad? Great sequel! THE INVISIBLE WOMAN- This one is strictly for laughs. A scientist (John Barrymore) invents an invisibility machine with his assistant (Margaret "Wicked Witch Of The West" Hamilton). A young woman volunteers to be turned invisible and the slapstick begins. A gang of thugs wants the machine for obvious criminal reasons. The gang even includes a stooge (Shemp Howard)! Worth a look. THE INVISIBLE AGENT- Jon Hall is the title character, dropped behind...

The Invisible Man: One of the Best Films of the 30s
Between directing the original "Frankenstein" in 1931 and his masterpiece "Bride of Frankenstein" in 1935, James Whale put out a little gem called "The Invisible Man" in 1933. In some ways I rate "The Invisible Man" above "Frankenstein." For one thing "The Invisible Man" has a great musical score which heightens the drama in many scenes and helps to speed the pace of the film. The original "Frankenstein" had no musical score (strange one was never added for re-release as it would have improved an already great film tremendously) as musical scores weren't commonplace until a few years later. I also think that Whale had developed greatly as a director between 1931 and 1933. "Frankenstein" has many scenes that seem to be stagey and lack the finesse of Whale's later films.

In many ways "The Invisible Man" is Universal's most horrific horror film of the 1930s. Dracula was a vampire who killed to sustain his own existence, Frankenstein's Monster was a misunderstood and...

The Trials and Tribulations of Invisibility
The movie Van Helsing may have been pretty awful, but it did do one good thing in giving Universal a reason to release a lot of its old monster movies. The Invisible Man boxed set is the second best in the bunch, behind only Frankenstein but ahead of Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Mummy. (I have not viewed the Creature boxed set).

The strength in this set is due to two things: the high caliber of the original movie and the fact that all five movies have unique stories. Compare this with the Mummy boxed set in which the four sequels to the original movie all have essentially the same plot.

The original movie is top quality, principally due to the direction of James Whale, clearly the best of the monster movie directors (his other works include the excellent Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein). Claude Rains plays the title character, initially sympathetic but eventually a villain as madness accompanies his invisibility. For those familiar with Gloria Stuart...

Out of Africa (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Africa DVD is Gorgeous
The transfer of OUT OF AFRICA is gorgeous on this newly released DVD. The African sun is bright and the detail is crisp -- very important since the scenery is practically a third character in this Oscar-winning "Best Picture" from 1985.

I really enjoyed "Song of Africa", the documentary created for this DVD release. Not mentioned in the DVD's technical specs, this documentary features several cut scenes not included in the film (except in a network television showing). Example: the subplot of the servant boy with the bad leg whom Karen Blixen heals. There are a few Redford-Streep scenes there, too, which ended up on the cutting room floor (a last dance among Karen Blixen's packed-up home; a made-up story on safari.)

Also, the documentary features incredibly funny and entertaining tales told by Meryl Streep. She is a great mimic -- listen to the sound effects that woman can make! At times hilarious and reflective, she shares stories about the...

Beyond this place there be dragons
"Out of Africa" stands out as one of the most spectacular movies ever made. At the 1985 Academy Awards this movie won seven Oscars including Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Picture. It deserved all seven!

It is filled with romance, scenery, real-life struggles and the inevitability of fate. It is a journey into Africa and into love. The escape is in the hand of fate. This movie presents Africa as a paradise. The natural environment is harsh, yet unspoiled in this movie.

This is based on the true story of Danish writer Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) who left Denmark to marry German Klaus Maria Brandauer/Baron Bror Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and start a dairy in Kenya.

Some women do enjoy the security of a man looking after them, however Karen is different. She seems to desire companionship and offers her fortune in exchange for marriage. Her husband changes his mind about the dairy and instead they use her money on a risky...

Takes My Breath Away....
This review refers to the Universal Widescreen "Collector's Edition" DVD of "Out Of Africa".....

"Out Of Africa" not only takes my breath away, but for 2 hours and 40 minutes I am transported to another time and place. A beautiful story in a wonderous setting will have you mesmerized as well. No matter how many times I view this film, I never tire of the gorgeous cinematography, the lulling music, the compelling story and of course the superb acting all brought together by the wonderful direction of Sydney Pollack.

Based on a true story, it depicts the life of Karen Blixen(who wrote under the name of Isak Dinesen) She marries a philandering Baron, and gains a title but discovers he has squandered her money on a coffee plantation in Kenya. Left to run it on her own, she befriends the local residents "The Kikuyu", offers them education and medical help, survives on her own strong willed nature and falls in love with the country, the people and...

Thomas & Friends: Milkshake Muddle

Great edition for your Thomas lover!
My two year old adores this DVD! Because I'm a teacher, I'm always looking for a way to make his TV time more educational - the special features in this video get my vote! It's nice to have a short break between the stories to make your child think! There's a feature that has children matching shapes, then a maze that matches engines to their special job (ie - Percy to the mail cars). This dvd also has two songs (that will get stuck in your head if you aren't careful). Our edition also came with Duncan (purchased for the same price at Wal-mart). Several of the stories feature Duncan and Toby which was a delight for my son who just adores Toby. You are also introduced to Mighty Mac and Neville. The short stories are engaging and enjoyable for you and your child (OK, maybe not you after the 50th time, but the first few times are great!) Even better, we get out our trains and recreate the story after it's done.

The interface of the DVD is great! You aren't forced to watch ad...

Great Value
My 3 year old loves the Thomas shows and this is such a great value getting a wooden train that would normally sell for $13 and up along with the DVD. The DVD has some really cute episodes on it too!

A must for little Thomas fans...
...but starting to conform a little too much to modern "sensibilities" for this grown up. The older, closer-to-the-original-story episodes are more fun, silly and nonsensical. By comparison, the engines' distinctive personalities are noticeably watered-down from the early episodes, and there is a lot less technical detail. We still love it, though. Beats the pants off Barney any day.

4 Film Favorites: Steve McQueen (The Hunter, Nevada Smith, Bullit, Papillon)

Great Movies for Little Price - Not High Def but Very Good
Unlike a lot of multi-movie sets, this set has 4 separate discs with color photos on them. They are stacked together on one hub in the case and do not scratch each other. They are very easy to remove and replace. The set of 4 movies is c 2013 pkg. design Warner Bros Ent. LLC & c 2013 Paramount Pictures, distributed by Warner Home Video. Each movie is dual format except The Hunter.

Here is the information for each individual move/disc. Where I have "Disc:" the disc shows information that is actually printed on the disc. The movies are all WS and 16x9. Papillon is also 2.4:1.

Bullitt, rated PG, English Dolby Surround, 114 mins., c 1968, renewed 1996 Warner Bros Ent Inc, Chad McQueen & Terry McQueen (successors-in-interest to Solar Productions Inc.), Disc 1: only shows c 1968, "no copying" and "US Not Rated." I put this disc in my laptop and it shows that it is Disc 1 of the "Special Edition" set and has the commentary by Director Peter Yates and trailer as well...

Home Sweet Home

Praise for 'Home Sweet Home.'
I caught this film in Albuquerque (Aliens and Outlaws)...and....it rocks! It's taught, gripping, and beautiful! I have never wanted to visit a locale so badly and steer completely away from it at the same time! (You'll know what I mean when you see the film).

The lead truly morphs before your eyes to rise up to the brutal challenges she faces. The villain is sexy and scary! I recommend this riveting adventure to anyone who enjoys high octane in their films.

'Home Sweet Home' manages to walk the thriller/horror line but remain extremely accessible to many film goers, and doesn't rely on gross outs and gore to keep audiences in their seats. Can't wait to pick up my blu ray of this film and drool over the cinematography on my 62" HD LED monitor! I"m also looking forward to seeing the making of featurette. My son is studying to be a film maker and wants to see how such a film was pulled off at its budget category.

Two thumps up for 'Home...

Suspense Thriller & a good one at that
Pretty good flick & what a badass killer that actress is. Seriously screwed up and entertaining to boot. You can't wait to see that sinister quirk of a smile. You'll like it, it's a decent story - would have liked a different ending. This review is short only because I'm exhausted today - don't let it reflect poorly on the film, it's a good one guys.

WHOSE FAULT IS THAT?
"Home Sweet Home" is another "me too" home invasion film. After getting her third final notice, unemployed Gwen (Alexandra Boylan) at the advice of her brother, (Andrew Boylan) returns to the isolated family home. She is going to fix it up and place it on the market, although it didn't look like it needed much of anything other than a broken bird feeder and who has those in the middle of the desert?

Unfortunately she has attracted the attention of a couple of bad people lead by Kristi (Raquel Cantu). She is your basic soulless Shari Moon Zombie type of bad girl, and the sole reason for watching this film. Other than her character, the film was boring. I fully expected a wicked twist at the end, i.e. her brother hired them to get rid of her so he can have the house himself, but it didn't happen.

The film wasn't particularly bad, but the twist and the interest factor was lame. Recommend as a rental only.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. Brief distant truck sex...
