Romeos (English Subtitled)

ROMEOS: A 'No Apologies' Kind of Movie!
Wow. Romeos moved me in so many ways that I feel...speechless. It's been a long time since I watched something that made the tiny hairs on my arms stand on edge. Moved to tears not only because of the performances (although they were extremely good) but because...finally someone has come along and made a movie so brutally honest, without apologies, on a topic that so many people are ignorant about. And we all know what happens when people are ignorant. Ignorance leads to fear and fear leads to blind hatred. That ignorance, fear, and hatred is what kills our youth, whether its from suicide or bashing.

Romeos was one of the movies I actually paid to see at last years 2011 Philadelphia Q-Fest. And guess what? When my mom and I got to the theater and were standing in line, we found out that something was wrong with the film equipment, therefore, we could either get a refund or come back tomorrow. Well, I had work the next day and I live about a good 40 mins from Philadelphia,...

An enjoyable film...
Romeos is one of those rare gems that tugs at your heart strings and makes you cheer for the hero of the film. This movie has a lot of heart and soul. It was funny at times yet serious all the same with a very relatable subject matter to those going through what the main character is going through of a person trapped in the wrong body finding his place in the world and all the while searching for acceptance from the people around him and from within.

Rick Okon, who plays the brave and rebellious Lukas, a gay trans man who is transioning from female to male, is simply amazing. He played the character with such realism and truth that I couldn't take my eyes off of him, more so than the object of Luka's attraction, Fabio, the closetted bad boy played by Maximilian Befort, who was amazing as well in the film. The other actor who stood out in the film for me was Liv Lisa Fries, who played Lukas lesbian BFF -Ine, who had to accept her childhood friend transformation from a girl...

Excellent film.
OMG this is a great movie. Guaranteed to make you laugh and cry and just say to yourself WOW. I love the German gay interest movies. Always a treat. The story is excellently written and acted. The main characters give it their all especially Rick Okon who is just amazing. Well worth the money. You will watch it over again.

The Invisible Man [Blu-ray]

Invisibly Yours...
THE INVISIBLE MAN- Claude Rains is awesome as the man whose invisibility serum slowly rots his brain. Hunted by police, he sets out to cure himself and get revenge on the man who betrayed him. Excellent stuff! Check out the running pair of pants scene! THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS- has Vincent Price as a man on death row, framed for a murder he did not commit. He gets some help in the form of the invisibilty serum and simply walks out of prison! Can he prove his innocense and find the real killer before te serum drives him mad? Great sequel! THE INVISIBLE WOMAN- This one is strictly for laughs. A scientist (John Barrymore) invents an invisibility machine with his assistant (Margaret "Wicked Witch Of The West" Hamilton). A young woman volunteers to be turned invisible and the slapstick begins. A gang of thugs wants the machine for obvious criminal reasons. The gang even includes a stooge (Shemp Howard)! Worth a look. THE INVISIBLE AGENT- Jon Hall is the title character, dropped behind...

The Invisible Man: One of the Best Films of the 30s
Between directing the original "Frankenstein" in 1931 and his masterpiece "Bride of Frankenstein" in 1935, James Whale put out a little gem called "The Invisible Man" in 1933. In some ways I rate "The Invisible Man" above "Frankenstein." For one thing "The Invisible Man" has a great musical score which heightens the drama in many scenes and helps to speed the pace of the film. The original "Frankenstein" had no musical score (strange one was never added for re-release as it would have improved an already great film tremendously) as musical scores weren't commonplace until a few years later. I also think that Whale had developed greatly as a director between 1931 and 1933. "Frankenstein" has many scenes that seem to be stagey and lack the finesse of Whale's later films.

In many ways "The Invisible Man" is Universal's most horrific horror film of the 1930s. Dracula was a vampire who killed to sustain his own existence, Frankenstein's Monster was a misunderstood and...

The Trials and Tribulations of Invisibility
The movie Van Helsing may have been pretty awful, but it did do one good thing in giving Universal a reason to release a lot of its old monster movies. The Invisible Man boxed set is the second best in the bunch, behind only Frankenstein but ahead of Dracula, the Wolf Man and the Mummy. (I have not viewed the Creature boxed set).

The strength in this set is due to two things: the high caliber of the original movie and the fact that all five movies have unique stories. Compare this with the Mummy boxed set in which the four sequels to the original movie all have essentially the same plot.

The original movie is top quality, principally due to the direction of James Whale, clearly the best of the monster movie directors (his other works include the excellent Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein). Claude Rains plays the title character, initially sympathetic but eventually a villain as madness accompanies his invisibility. For those familiar with Gloria Stuart...

Out of Africa (Blu-ray + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Africa DVD is Gorgeous
The transfer of OUT OF AFRICA is gorgeous on this newly released DVD. The African sun is bright and the detail is crisp -- very important since the scenery is practically a third character in this Oscar-winning "Best Picture" from 1985.

I really enjoyed "Song of Africa", the documentary created for this DVD release. Not mentioned in the DVD's technical specs, this documentary features several cut scenes not included in the film (except in a network television showing). Example: the subplot of the servant boy with the bad leg whom Karen Blixen heals. There are a few Redford-Streep scenes there, too, which ended up on the cutting room floor (a last dance among Karen Blixen's packed-up home; a made-up story on safari.)

Also, the documentary features incredibly funny and entertaining tales told by Meryl Streep. She is a great mimic -- listen to the sound effects that woman can make! At times hilarious and reflective, she shares stories about the...

Beyond this place there be dragons
"Out of Africa" stands out as one of the most spectacular movies ever made. At the 1985 Academy Awards this movie won seven Oscars including Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Picture. It deserved all seven!

It is filled with romance, scenery, real-life struggles and the inevitability of fate. It is a journey into Africa and into love. The escape is in the hand of fate. This movie presents Africa as a paradise. The natural environment is harsh, yet unspoiled in this movie.

This is based on the true story of Danish writer Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) who left Denmark to marry German Klaus Maria Brandauer/Baron Bror Blixen (Klaus Maria Brandauer) and start a dairy in Kenya.

Some women do enjoy the security of a man looking after them, however Karen is different. She seems to desire companionship and offers her fortune in exchange for marriage. Her husband changes his mind about the dairy and instead they use her money on a risky...

Takes My Breath Away....
This review refers to the Universal Widescreen "Collector's Edition" DVD of "Out Of Africa".....

"Out Of Africa" not only takes my breath away, but for 2 hours and 40 minutes I am transported to another time and place. A beautiful story in a wonderous setting will have you mesmerized as well. No matter how many times I view this film, I never tire of the gorgeous cinematography, the lulling music, the compelling story and of course the superb acting all brought together by the wonderful direction of Sydney Pollack.

Based on a true story, it depicts the life of Karen Blixen(who wrote under the name of Isak Dinesen) She marries a philandering Baron, and gains a title but discovers he has squandered her money on a coffee plantation in Kenya. Left to run it on her own, she befriends the local residents "The Kikuyu", offers them education and medical help, survives on her own strong willed nature and falls in love with the country, the people and...

Thomas & Friends: Milkshake Muddle

Great edition for your Thomas lover!
My two year old adores this DVD! Because I'm a teacher, I'm always looking for a way to make his TV time more educational - the special features in this video get my vote! It's nice to have a short break between the stories to make your child think! There's a feature that has children matching shapes, then a maze that matches engines to their special job (ie - Percy to the mail cars). This dvd also has two songs (that will get stuck in your head if you aren't careful). Our edition also came with Duncan (purchased for the same price at Wal-mart). Several of the stories feature Duncan and Toby which was a delight for my son who just adores Toby. You are also introduced to Mighty Mac and Neville. The short stories are engaging and enjoyable for you and your child (OK, maybe not you after the 50th time, but the first few times are great!) Even better, we get out our trains and recreate the story after it's done.

The interface of the DVD is great! You aren't forced to watch ad...

Great Value
My 3 year old loves the Thomas shows and this is such a great value getting a wooden train that would normally sell for $13 and up along with the DVD. The DVD has some really cute episodes on it too!

A must for little Thomas fans...
...but starting to conform a little too much to modern "sensibilities" for this grown up. The older, closer-to-the-original-story episodes are more fun, silly and nonsensical. By comparison, the engines' distinctive personalities are noticeably watered-down from the early episodes, and there is a lot less technical detail. We still love it, though. Beats the pants off Barney any day.

Great Movies for Little Price - Not High Def but Very Good
Unlike a lot of multi-movie sets, this set has 4 separate discs with color photos on them. They are stacked together on one hub in the case and do not scratch each other. They are very easy to remove and replace. The set of 4 movies is c 2013 pkg. design Warner Bros Ent. LLC & c 2013 Paramount Pictures, distributed by Warner Home Video. Each movie is dual format except The Hunter.

Here is the information for each individual move/disc. Where I have "Disc:" the disc shows information that is actually printed on the disc. The movies are all WS and 16x9. Papillon is also 2.4:1.

Home Sweet Home

Praise for 'Home Sweet Home.'
I caught this film in Albuquerque (Aliens and Outlaws)...and....it rocks! It's taught, gripping, and beautiful! I have never wanted to visit a locale so badly and steer completely away from it at the same time! (You'll know what I mean when you see the film).

The lead truly morphs before your eyes to rise up to the brutal challenges she faces. The villain is sexy and scary! I recommend this riveting adventure to anyone who enjoys high octane in their films.

'Home Sweet Home' manages to walk the thriller/horror line but remain extremely accessible to many film goers, and doesn't rely on gross outs and gore to keep audiences in their seats. Can't wait to pick up my blu ray of this film and drool over the cinematography on my 62" HD LED monitor! I"m also looking forward to seeing the making of featurette. My son is studying to be a film maker and wants to see how such a film was pulled off at its budget category.

Two thumps up for 'Home...

Suspense Thriller & a good one at that
Pretty good flick & what a badass killer that actress is. Seriously screwed up and entertaining to boot. You can't wait to see that sinister quirk of a smile. You'll like it, it's a decent story - would have liked a different ending. This review is short only because I'm exhausted today - don't let it reflect poorly on the film, it's a good one guys.

WHOSE FAULT IS THAT?
"Home Sweet Home" is another "me too" home invasion film. After getting her third final notice, unemployed Gwen (Alexandra Boylan) at the advice of her brother, (Andrew Boylan) returns to the isolated family home. She is going to fix it up and place it on the market, although it didn't look like it needed much of anything other than a broken bird feeder and who has those in the middle of the desert?

Unfortunately she has attracted the attention of a couple of bad people lead by Kristi (Raquel Cantu). She is your basic soulless Shari Moon Zombie type of bad girl, and the sole reason for watching this film. Other than her character, the film was boring. I fully expected a wicked twist at the end, i.e. her brother hired them to get rid of her so he can have the house himself, but it didn't happen.

The film wasn't particularly bad, but the twist and the interest factor was lame. Recommend as a rental only.

Parental Guide: F-bomb. Brief distant truck sex...

Canton Junction Live at Cornerstone

A FANTASTIC DVD!
This is one fantastic DVD and should not be missed! All four singers are extremely passionate about the message they give. They are obviously bonded in an unusual way, and are also a lot of fun to watch. I always say that one has to SEE Aaron Crabb sing to fully appreciate him, and this DVD proves that. And I--and the audience--very much like Tim Duncan's spectacular bass voice. The songs selected cover a wide range of Gospel music, and the bonus numbers are fabulous! A DVD that carries a lot of joy and inspiration!

Very enjoyable
I enjoyed seeing Tim Duncan back on a stage again. Don't overlook the bonus tracks! They are just as fun as the rest of the DVD.

Awesome!!
If you like southern gospel music you will lobe this. It is so good & such a blessing! Can't go wrong with this one.

The Company We Keep

Fresh Faces
Not a big fan of urban genre films but this movie was quite interesting. It really showcased how the record industry is on a spiral downfall. Some of the characters were refreshing. Most films within this category don't have as many talented actors in the cast either. It was kinda cool to even recognize some of these newcomers from tv shows, comedy clubs and big budget tv commercials. The plot was fast and furocious but hey it's an indie and a romance comedy.

strong woman's film
This film was of interest to me because it mixes up several areas I love. Strong women, artistic expression, philosophy and history. It has an original approach of self -talk brought into the action. Love scenes fun. The various characters were enjoyable to meet. nicole milner

DON'T MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE TWICE
The title has a duo meaning, both on a personal level, and attempting to keep a company. The story centers Teri (Nefetari Spencer) who manages a record label, one that has financial problems. She is engaged to Dwight (Stephen Bishop) who is a multimillionaire football player. She is attempting to promote Sean Starr (Jamie Starr) on a limited budget while laying people off and moving the company from Beverly Hills to East LA.

Teri does a number of asides to explain her feelings. This really doesn't do anything but highlight the inadequacies of the script. I found the characters to be flat and poorly developed. They branched out at the end instead of coming together, The script was flat also. It was a real yawner watching one poorly written and acted scene after another. A rather trite drama.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs or nudity. Brief sex/love scenes.

love this show
This show is addicting! Be careful once you start you won't be able to stop! I hate waiting until next week for the next episode!

Love it!!!
I absolouteley LOVE this show!! Cant wait to find out who the new A is! You can watch this season live on Abc family on tuesday nights.

PLL Season 3
I only recently starting watching PLL recently. I started with Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix and was sucked in enough to purchase the first 10 episodes of Season 3 on Amazon Instant so that I could catch up to the current season.

Critiques that this show are far-fetched and that the acting is occasionally sub-par are accurate, but the twists, turns, and camp are what make this show so fun to watch.

The four main characters, despite being the title "liars," each have their own set of flaws that make them loveable and while at first the audience wonders "why are these girls even friends?" soon enough the friendship among them seems genuine and you are on their side as they try to figure out who murdered their best friend and who the mysterious "A" is.

Ordering this with the TV pass a great idea. I was able to purchase all the early episodes of Season 3 for a reasonable price and then cancel it when I was caught up enough to watch the new episodes currently...

Chupacabra vs. The Alamo

Chupacabra vs. The Alamo......
Strange things are happening in San Antonio. Members of rival drug cartels are turning up dead with every drop of blood siphoned from their bodies. When DEA Agent Carlos Seguin investigates, he discovers that the murder suspect isn't human. Now, he must prepare for the true last stand at the Alamo...against a rampaging pack of blood-sucking Chupacabras.

I must admit, when I heard that Erik Estrada(of TV's CHIPS) was in this film, I thought to myself that the film might not be too bad. Heck, most of the films I've seen Estrada in have always been pretty good. Don't get me wrong, the film itself isn't too bad. At times, it does take itself way too seriously. What made it an okay film instead of a film that I like is this...if you're going to make a good Chupacabra film, why not make them- at least- look halfway threatenng. The CGI Chupacabras, for the most part, were effective enough yet there were times (especially with the smaller Chupacabras) where they looked like...

Humorous SyFy Silliness That Makes The Most Of Its Leading Man, Erik Estrada
4 stars: Lovers of Cheesy SyFy Fare
1 1/2 stars: Everyone Else

In approaching a SyFy channel original creature feature, there are only so many resultant options available in terms of entertainment value: (1) The movie can be unrelentingly and painfully bad, (2) it can be so delightfully horrendous that it's camp nirvana, or (3) it can be genuinely frightening or effective. Faithful fans of the network's slate of films will realize that most fall within the first category while only a miniscule few hit that third category. No, as a true SyFy fan, I generally hope for that second classification: cheesy goodness that makes bad movie magic! You know with the title "Chupacabra vs. The Alamo" that this latest endeavor isn't even trying for genuine scares or seriousness. Boasting the stellar talents of Erik Estrada and Julia Benson (she's a headliner, but I wasn't familiar with her resume), I was definitely afraid for the worst. Truthfully, though, the movie pleasantly...

MY DOG ATE MY HOMEWORK
Carlos Seguin (Erik Estrada) and his new partner Tracy (Julia Benson) are investigating a murder. Erik believes it is some kind of gang killing while Tracy opts for CG canines. If you read the title of the film, you already now it is the CG canines known as Chupacabra, which look like a big ugly coyote. Carlos has family issues which become part of the film as they try to iron out their problems.

The special effects make for a campy film. The CG animals, CG gun fire, and the scenery moving in the background as Erik rides his bike, like a 1940's film. His jumping over a car and the use of a CG grenade was perhaps the highlights of the campy humor. The dialouge was fairly lame with noticeable music and scene changes for commercial breaks.

There is plenty of fake blood and killing as these animals who have lived in the wild have mastered door knob operations with their first attempt. Unless you are a fan of bad SyFy films, stay away.

Parental Guide: No...

Revenge From The Deep

Finally!
Since this series was never syndicated, finding ways of watching it were tough to say the least. The first season was all we had available on DVD, but that was probably the weakest of all of them.

Sherman Howard makes a welcome change as the new Lex Luthor. His origin of becoming Lex Luthor is a little whacky, and conveniently never referred to again, but he makes a great villain nonetheless. Gerard Christopher taking over the title character is a little awkward if you've just come off of the first season, but he grows into the role nicely as the series progresses. And the stories begin to mature here, as well. They're not as dark in tone was the 3rd and 4th seasons, but they're definitely less campy than the 1st season.

As far as the DVD itself, first of all, I was surprised to find that these are NOT DVD-R's as their description says. These are regular old, factory-pressed DVDs. The audio and picture are greatly improved from the first season, too. You...

Better than season 1 and worth the wait
I had waited so long on Warner to bring out the second season of this series that I had given up. I'm very glad they finally decided to listen to the fans and do a second season. The second season (and season 3 and 4) are much better than season 1. If you are a superman fan (especially of the late seventies version of superman) I think you will like this series. It is NOT dark, it is NOT outstanding special effects, but it IS a very enjoyable story and fun to watch.

Oh and contrary to another viewer's review these discs ARE DVRs (which you can plainly see by looking at the surface of the discs), but they are well done and look very much like factory-made DVDs based on the design and quality of the artwork. I had no problems playing these discs on my Blu-ray player. Warner, please don't make us wait years to bring out the final two seasons of this great series. Highly recommended.

A big difference since season 1
Those of you who were disenchanted with this groundbreaking series, I ask you to please give it a second chance. This second season began new changes which completely took the series in a new direction to become one of the very best incarnations of 'Superman' ever put to film.
When executive producer Ilya Salkind created this series originally it was set at Schuster university. The first season was cheesy and the special effects had much to be desired. The show was in danger of cancellation by the end of the first season so drastic measures were taken to save the show. What they did was genius.
Gone was John Haymes Newton as the lead role replaced by Gerard Christopher. Gone was the poorly casted Scott Wells and replaced by the most noticeable and greatest cast change Sherman Howard who now played a truly sinister Lex Luthor who was inspired by the great Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker in the first Batman movie which, at the time, was still fresh in people's minds...

Fluid Technique with Zoe Jakes - 2 disc set

Really good primer
So I will start this review by saying the I received mine as part of a contest hosted by the producer of this DVD. I will on the other hand be as honest as I can be. So to start out this review I have been doing Egyptian/Cabaret style belly dance for a year now and recently have started taking lessons in the tribal style. I have a strong dance background in other styles such as Ballroom dance and have begun taking yoga lessons regularly.

So for tribal DVDs I will say that Zoe Jakes has the best on screen personality that I have encountered she seems friendly to the audience even though we aren't there. Which is really important, I have the Serpentine DVD and unfortunately the narrating in that DVD is much to monotone and impersonal for my taste making it hard to use for practice. That being said I feel like some parts of the DVD could be improved.

The warm-up for both discs is the same, while I have no problem with that normally some of the moves that were...

A belly dance most
It is Zoe Jakes. Need I say more. I think it there is a ton of information in this set of DVDs. I am a beginner so this is beyond my experience but It is a reference guide that I will use for a long time. It is worth the money.

This Is What "Superboy" Fans Have Long Awaited!
After two middling seasons and many casting changes, this Third Season of "Superboy" was when the show really took off and produced some of the most quality moments of Superman-related fare ever created.

Of course, one must always remember to watch "Superboy" with tongue firmly planted in cheek. It is pretty campy throughout (though not to quite to the extent of 1960s Batman, for example) and was obviously made for a children's audience. However, if you can overlook the "cheese" factor (nostalgia helps!) and take the show for what it is, you will enjoy most every episode.

The format of this season is changed up quite a bit from Season Two. Instead of school kids, Clark and Lana now work (ala Mulder & Scully!) at the Bureau of Extranormal Events where they investigate strange cases. Gone is Andy McCallister and the juvenile tone he brought to the show. The highlights of this third season include:

-4 "portal" episodes involving Superboy travelling...

A real Super series
If you have never seen either season 1 or 2 of Superboy but want to know the kind of show it is, this is probably the best season to watch. The first season was pretty awful. The original "Lex Luthor" in the first season was unforgivable casting. TJ White was also a boring character who served as a 'Jimmy Olsen' type person. Stacy Haiduk as Lana Lang was the only main character to be involved with the show all four seasons and she shines in each season. The original Superboy played by John Haynes Newton looked the part and he played it very straight much like George Reeves in the 1950s version. The stories from the first season were very lame, the special effects were terrible, and it was almost cancelled based on the original ratings. But things really did change for the better when Gerard Christopher filled in the boots as the new Superboy. And the original Lex Luthor was replaced with the phenomenal Howard Shermann. The second season was a huge step in the right direction by...

Rather enjoyable
Two things you don't ask about the series at this point:

1) What is the "Bureau of Paranormal Investigations," and how do two college Juniors get year-long internships in which they become full on field agents?" (answer - it helped the show a "Daily Planet-esque" setting)

2) Why is a grown man still calling himself "Superboy?" (answer - the producers didn't have the rights to the name "Superman")

Once you get past those two glaring plot holes, the show itself becomes rather enjoyable this point. Moving away from campiness found in all of Season 1 and big chunk of Season 2, this is when the show tried its best at more dramatic storytelling. This season also contains probably the best story arc of the series, "The Roads Not Taken." You can also sense a much darker tone to the show beginning with this season, likely due to the influence of Tim Burton's first Batman movie coming out around this same time.

Threesome, Part Two

Continues The Quality Of The Third Season
Until this point in the "Superboy" canon of seasons, the quality had varied considerably from season to season. Season One was wooden and with almost a completely different cast. Season Two got the casting right, but the tone was still so goofy. Season Three finally put everything together and ran off probably the best string of episodes (including the "portal" series) in the show's history. Luckily, though, Season Four does not include such a sea change and instead just continues to produce quality "Superboy" television.

Perhaps the biggest change for this final season is that many more two-part stories are used. It seems as if (for better or worse) every third episode or so ends with "to be continued".

Some highlights of this season include...

-The building romance between Superboy/Clark (Gerard Christopher) and Lana (Stacy Haiduk). It's all very kid-friendly per the show's nature, of course, but there is definitely a progression as the season...

Superboy was a great tv show
I love this show. Season 4 is one of the best seasons from Superboy. If you like Christopher Reeve as Superman you will love Gerard Christopher as Superboy.

Scaramouche

Incredibly spectacular but not half as good as the 1952 version
While the 1952 version can't match Rex Ingram's incredibly lavish 1923 silent version for sheer spectacle, it has to be said that in most other respects the original Scaramouche doesn't measure up to its successor. Roman Novarro's Scaramouche certainly doesn't seem to have been born with the gift of laughter, spending most of the film brooding instead of swashing buckles. Here he's more of a revolutionary firebrand, with more of an emphasis on the political side of the period leading up to the Revolution, but it's also a much more unfocussed narrative, with the story crawling as Andre drifts between the various roles fate casts him in. It suffers from a much weaker villain in Lewis Stone, more of a nuisance than a threat despite the actor's best efforts (though it is amusing when he's unable to recall a wench who presents him with his illegitimate son), and Alice Terry's leading lady is a far less appealing proposition than his co-star on the stage. Costing Metro Pictures (soon to be...

The Silent Good Scaramouche
When I was very young I saw the brillant movie with Stewart Granger and Mel Ferrer, but when after I read the novel by Raphael Sabatini, it seams to me, not so alike...Now, in DVD, I saw the silent movie with Ramon Novarro and, with the limits as the absence of colours, and sound, the film was far much respectuous to Sabatini's story.

Lives in the balance - the delicate struggle to obtain a future in America
On average, maybe one in two hundred applicants are ever admitted to the United States as a refugee. The official definition of a refugee is someone who is afraid to go home for fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, social group or political opinion. Any foreigner who finds a way into the United States may apply for refugee protection in the form of political asylum and these requests are handled by the Immigration & Naturalization Service (INS). When an asylum officer is unable to make a solid decision to grant refugee status to someone, the case is then referred to an immigration judge for final disposition. About 1 in 5 cases is ever reversed in appeal.

A significant portion of this program focuses on duties of asylum officers and for good reason. They are saddled with the tremendous responsibility of deciding what might be the fate of many people's lives. Interviews with them reveal many challenges they face such as determining honesty and...

A great documentary... 4.5 stars
One measure of the emotional wallop that this documentary packs is the fact that at times, I found myself screaming at the television screen, pleading with the INS official hearing the case of a refugee claimant, to realize that the applicant was being poorly served by their translator or just paralyzed with fear. It also forces the viewer to question your own prejudices; I am just as scornful as the INS interviewer when a Romanian woman claiming asylum because of persecution as an Anglican can't name the Archbishop of Canterbury when asked for the name of the church's global leader; instead identifying a Bishop of Gibraltar. (The end notes after the film tell us that indeed, the head of the Anglican church for Ana Maria's region is indeed the bishop of Gibraltar; possibly she had misunderstood the question -- one wonders how often such petty misunderstandings produce tragic outcomes.)

But the film does far more than tug at our heartstrings. For a nation of immigrants (some...

Fascinating and Still Relevant
Although this documentary was filmed over a decade ago, it still feels relevant and current. Highly recommended for people interested in immigration and refugee issues. Particularly well-suited for discussion groups, college or law school classes, or immigrant intake/interview training.

An Amusing Youth-Oriented Australian Import About Ordinary Girls Channeling Their Inner Fish
Targeted primarily at young girls under the age of thirteen, "H2O: Just Add Water" has a goofy and appealing premise that will tap into your love of mermaids. You do love mermaids, don't you? Three sixteen year olds discover a mysterious glowing pool of water through an underwater channel that will upend their lives irrevocably. This adventure has long range repercussions as each of the girls find themselves transformed into a mermaid! Needless to say, they must avoid contact with the sea to keep their flippers a secret. There is plenty of humor surrounding these changes, but the show never really addresses the fundamental questions that you really care about. What happens when it rains? As if this wasn't enough, though, they also have other powers over water as well. Rikki (Cariba Heine) can boil water, Cleo (Phoebe Tonkin) can manipulate it, and Emma (Claire Holt) can freeze it. That would be useful at a party, huh?

"H2O: Just Add Water" ran for three seasons in...

Great Show!
It's teenage drama without the WB angst.
While, I am a very big fan of such things as Buffy, it's nice to see a teenager drama that's just fun.It has a a lot of heart and it's well written. And that has always been my biggest criteria for watching a show to begin with.
Jonathan Schiff is one of my favourites, He was the one who produced "Ocean Girl" an award-winning children's drama that was on 4 years back in 1994-98.
But another very strong part of any of his shows is friendship and loyalty. The girls who are now mermaids might not have been friends if it weren't for being mermaids, but they stick together. They also have the support of Lewis, a boy who has feelings for Cleo but both are too awkward for the expression of it, but he's got their back against those that try to expose them. Together, they are a team. They are friends. And they'd sacrifice everything for each other.

ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS EVER FOR MERMAIDS
Ok, this is now up there with my top favorite shows! I'm obsessed with Mermaids and this show completely feeds my desire of returning to an underwater world. The three main characters are gorgeous young ladies, one more pretty than the next who make the show incredibly entertaining from start to finish. Of course you'll love them in their Mer form as well! Being an American it is so much fun to hear everyone's Australian accents on the show. Everything from the sets to the soundtrack is pure fun. I even bought the soundtrack by Kate Alexa the other day on iTunes. I SIMPLY CANNOT WAIT FOR VOLUME 2 and Season 2 to be released in Region 1 format; GET WITH THE PROGRAM AMAZON for Heaven sakes!

Pineapple Express Unrated

Remarkably fun and well-crafted.
A movie like PINEAPPLE EXPRESS should not be expected to be talked about in the same breath as CITIZEN KANE or GONE WITH THE WIND. However, it has nonetheless ascended to near the top ranks in its own particularly little sub-genre: the "pot" comedy.

While Cheech & Chong's UP IN SMOKE will probably always lead the pack, simply for being the first (and for being very edgy...in it's day)...EXPRESS is the first film of its ilk to boast huge laughs, modest thrills, enjoyable lead characters and a narrative structure that doesn't fall apart the further it goes. For example, the HAROLD AND KUMAR films can be greatly amusing, but their "plot" grows more and more flaccid and pointless as they move along. The lead "characters" are hardly believable as people...they are comic devices.

In PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, we have the story of a process server (Seth Rogan) who enjoys doing little else but smoking pot. He is decent at his job, but also spends much of it sitting in his...

Proof that James Franco can actually act
This was another in a long line of funny movies from Judd Apatow, but with a lot more action thrown in for good measure. Seth Rogen may always sound and act the same in everything he does, but that doesn't make him any less funny. James Franco is the real star of the show. I always thought he had great potential, but he just seemed so bland in the Spider-Man movies and Flyboys. This is a well acted and funny performance. I heard some people on the web talk about casting him as The Joker in the next Batman movie. Whether it happens or not, I now think he has a chance to pull it off. All the other cast members are weirdly memorable, especially the cat loving drug dealer who just won't die.

Pineapple Express does get really violent and a little gory towards the end, but it is a good mix of comedy and action. It's just plain fun.

3 and 1/2 out of 5 stars

The muddy moments are forgivably sparse...
Truth be told, there were moments in this film where I died of uncontrollable laughter. I mean, Seth Rogen is hilarious, and James Franco is really transforming into an actor I get excited about watching. What happened there? There was a time when I would intentionally avoid movies starring that guy. I must say, he's surprised me. This film is a little unevenly crafted, but the end result is not anything to be ashamed of. It basically follows some stoner idiots as they run from a corrupt police officer and a drug dealer who they happened to witness kill some guy. The film bounces along nicely, remaining forgivably unbelievable. The ending, for me, was a mess and that whole action sequence overload killed a little of the films `fun factor', but the ending diner sequence was a laugh riot so I forgave it. James Franco owns this movie, playing a mindless stoner to perfection with the right amount of overplayed tenderness to make his character a pure standout. Not much else to...

Napoleon Dynamite [HD]

"I caught you a delicious bass."
In high school, I was one of the nameless, faceless rabble who drew little attention, maintained a low profile, and caused little trouble all in the hopes of getting out relatively unscathed, a goal I managed to accomplish, partly due to my sometimes intimidating presence, but mainly because I was able to fit in, sort of like a fish within a shoal...but there were those who weren't so fortunate, as obvious physical characteristics or personality traits (or both) tended to enunciate their presence regardless of vain attempts to `blend in' or enjoy the anonymity I, and those like me, tended to take for granted. Napoleon Dynamite (2004) is a film about one of those individuals.

The film, written and directed by Jared Hess, takes place in a small Idaho town and stars Jon Heder as the title character (he reminded me a lot of Timothy Busfield's character of Arnold Poindexter in the 1984 film Revenge of the Nerds). Also appearing is Jon Gries (Real Genius, Fright Night Part II),...

Geeeze Don't be an "Idiot" just see it!
I knew absolutley nothing about this flick when my 14 year old red-headed math whiz son said Dad let's go see this movie. From the opening credits I was entertained. This movie, is essentially a "day in the life of an Idaho high school nerd as he moves through various life cycle events and characters." Though the word "nerd" hardly seems to do justice to the timeless nature of title character Napoleon Dynamite. With little or no plot, Napoleon turned out to be more than part nostalgia. It was a stroll down memory lane. If I did not know that the writers in fact lived in Idaho, I would have sworn they had gone to my High School in South Florda in the late 70's. Our Senior Class Vice-President was in fact PEDRO from Mexico, our class Secretary, Melanie a blonde buxom cheerleader incarnate of this films' fictional "Summer" character and our Treasurer sported a huge Afro and all were clad in their finest disco outfits.

I guess this is why this sleeper film has gained such...

The New Mormon Cinema Finds Its Poster Boy
For the past few years there has been a movement in American film you could call "The New Mormon Cinema." Young Latter-day Saint filmmakers (definitely inspired by the Sundance Film Festival which is held right in their own backyard) have been making inexpensive independent films that are targeted at the Mormon population that stretches in the west from Alberta in Canada down past the Mexican border (the so-called "Mormon Corridor.") Most of these movies have been really bad, cheaply done sit-com influenced "comedies" that have had absolutely no influence on non-Mormon audiences. (With the honorable exeception of Richard Dutcher, the director of good movies like the missionary drama "God's Army" and the thriller "Brigham City.") Things began to change this year with widespread recognition going to the tough-minded World War II drama "Saints and Soldiers" and this twisted little comic masterpiece, "Napoleon Dynamite."

Jared and Jerusha Hess are products of Brigham Young...

Garden State [HD]

This movie is a must-own.
I found so much of this movie answered the questions i had been having in my life. It made me feel so good about what I have and ok with what I don't have. It made me see what is important in life. It sounds cliche to the maximum, but I laughed, I cried, and.....well I laughed more than I cried, but I left the theater (twice) with a complete and utter sense of awe. This is a spectacular movie.

just jump in...
this is definitely a movie to see if you've ever felt like screaming into "the infinite abyss." braff creates a story that is honest enough to be touching, quirky enough to be real. his imagery is both profound and effective, almost primarily because of the sometimes dry, sometimes laugh out loud silliness of the dialogue and situations used to carry it. if you like armor, or crazy motorbikes, or hamsters, or love, this is the movie for you. if you've ever felt trapped, or numb, or rejected, or odd, this is the movie for you. if you like amazing music, talented actors, and incredible cinematography, this is the movie for you.

when i left the theater, i felt humbled, and amazed, and a little less alone. stunning technical elements aside, i walked out of garden state feeling good.

Absolutely amazing.
My girlfriend and I became so obsessed with this film that we drove 100 miles to see it in Hollywood four times since it wasn't showing in our town. We then saw it two more times when our town finally began showing it. The film is one of the few movies I can watch over and over again and never tire of it. The soundtrack is also very well put-together and makes each scene that much more enjoyable.

Evita [HD]

This is a great movie...
I just purchased this DVD and I remembered instantly why I enjoyed this film so much when it came out. I would just like to answer some of the critiques listed here.

1) The character of Ché was always meant to be a nemesis to Evita, but not the real character as such . In the stage production that I saw, it was a man with the typical beret and machine gun singing to the side of the action. It would have been ridiculous and historically inaccurate to portray Ché as such in the movie version. Ché Guevara was still a medical student when Eva died. I think it is very effective to blend Ché into various characters because it represents the silent and not so silent opposition to the Perón Revolution. The only time the two characters meet for real interaction is when Evita is having delusions. The song argued in that moment perfectly clashes Ché's "idealism" with Evita's "realism." Ché is always there in some form, yet Evita...

EXCELLENT Adaption of the broadway show - have an open mind.
Boy do people miss the point on this movie. You can't present a movie like a broadway show. Everytime this has been attemped, historically, the results are bad, most adaptions of famous shows are only OK at best, some are awful. The medium is totally different, the demands are different, the singing is different, the acting style is different. Yes, the shows usually are "better", in a sense, that's how it was originally written, as a stage play. You have got to really change things to make a successful movie.

So how good an ADAPTION is this? Very good indeed. The story was changed to very effectively fit the medium. Madonna stretched herself unbelievably to do this role, and I think she did very well. You may quite validly prefer the stage version of Evita (I like both), but its almost like apples and oranges. As good as Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin were, they would, if they played it the same way anyway, come off mannered and absurd in a movie context...

certainties disappear
Worth noting that Evita is wall-to-wall music with virtually no spoken lines: not an opera so much as an extended music video, so the pop-music motifs need not be an anachronism.

I'm not a fan of Madonna, I find Andrew Lloyd Webber's music a bit obvious .. and yet -- and yet. Here everything seems to come together. It's a visually gorgeous film, the added songs (The Lady's Got Potential, You Must Love Me) are strong enhancements. The Che character's change from Che Guevara in the stage version to an Argentine Everyman here (desk clerk, bartender, cabinet minister, union activist) is an improvement over the stage musical and Antonio Banderas is a smoldering presence who carries the movie. Jimmy Nail is perfect as the oily tango singer; Jonathan Pryce capable in an equally slick role. The montage songs are splendid, like Goodnight and Thank You, that bucket-brigade sequence of Eva's lovers that she uses (and the film uses) to get her from the street to the Casa Rosada, or...

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son (Extended Cut) [HD]

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
Wow..this is my very first review...and what can i say...I don't understand why this movie is recieving so many negative reactions and reviews. I thought it was very funny and just an enjoyable movie. I actually like this one better than Big Momma's House 2. Martin Lawrence and Brandon T. Jackson have great chemistry both on-screen and off-screen,they are both comedians so the jokes were on point.(my opinion). Brandon T. Jackson replaced Jascha Washington after he declined to reprise the role of Trent, which in this movie, due to the plot and his character having a leading role, he probably wasn't the best fit for the "new" Trent anyway as the storyline makes it out to be.(my opinion)

The plot: FBI agent Malcolm Turner(Martin Lawrence) and his 17-year old stepson Trent(Brandon T. Jackson) go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murder. Posing as Big Momma and Charmaine, they must find the murderer before he finds them.

The...

enjoyable
Big Mommas House 1 was good. Big Mommas House 2 was much better. Big Mommas House: Like Father Like Son was better then the the first movie, but not as good as the second movie. I enjoyed this movie a lot. I wasn't crazy about the musical dances. I'm not crazy about musical movies. But I enjoyed it any ways.

Funny, Physical Comedy
I am not sure why this movie is getting so many bad reviews.

What I Can Tell You: I have seen all the Big Momma Movies and still crack up when I see Martin Lawrence as Momma/Malcolm. Come on, too funny. Lawrence and Jackson are funny together. My favorite scenes were any that Jackson had to act like a chick with hot dorm girls walking around in towels. Classic comedy at its best. A dude in drag, done a hundred times, but still funny. Oh, and I have got to mention Momma does nude modeling. Hahahaha...hysterical.

Although I missed Nia Long, as Malcolm's girlfriend I thought as far as a third attempt goes, this was funny.

This is obviously not an Oscar worthy movie, but, if what you are looking for is a good time, a few laughs at hidden identity and some physical comedy, this is a good choice.

Where East Is East

Browning and Chaney's delightfully demented popcorn opus
Like a true auteur, Tod Browning essentially kept remaking the same film. He was a peculiarity in Hollywood. He refused an agent, generally refused assignment scripts and, instead, consistently sought out material that interested him.

Where East is East (1929) was the last of the Tod Browning/Lon Chaney collaborations, it was the last of Browning's silent films, and it contained many themes from their previous efforts together.

The heavily scarred, large-feline-monikered Tiger Haynes (Chaney) is an animal trapper who has an uncomfortably playful relationship with his daughter Toya (the bubbly Lupe Velez). Their relationship alters between games of feline patty cake and overt protection. Daddy and Toya's relationship gets thrown its first monkey wrench when Toya acquires a new boyfriend, Bobby (Lloyd Hughes).

Acting like a jealous lover, Tiger refuses to warm up to Bobby, until Bobby assists Tiger in saving Toya from a real tiger. Now Bobby is a real...

Silent film without spoken words. Only the images and captions are brief enough to see pure art
Vision of deepest Asia to the Western pariahs. That's good. Lon Chaney is suberbo as always. The director - Tod Browning, also. The last piece of the dynamic duo - actor and director - 1929. Who knows why?

Untraceable (2008)

Tough, Brutal Diane Lane Thriller With Something To Say About Modern Times
Untraceable certainly isn't a flawless thriller, but it's a solid, enjoyable one. It's not only a grisly, hard-at-times to watch film, but it has a brain, and definite opinions about how our culture seems to feed like pirahna on the misery and suffering of others using the immediacy of the internet.

Diane Lane plays an Portland FBI cybercrime investigator who finds herself after a gruesome killer who kidnaps his victims and tortures them to death on the internet, upping the ante as fast as he gets hits on his website. Lane's character is still grieving the death of her husband, a policeman killed in the line of duty, and this case quickly intrudes on her life with her mom and her young daughter.

There's no phony romance with her cop partner, no killer who is somehow connected to Lane, and she gets to save the day without a male cop taking over for her. There are plot aspects that don't ring true, but overall, this is a smart, engrossing film that has something to...

Surfing the Web for Murder
The Internet is capable of many things, some of them good, some of them bad; "Untraceable" is a film that shows not only its ugly side, but the ugly side of humanity, as well. This is an unnerving, suspenseful film that doesn't skimp on social commentary, and this is despite the fact that it hurts like hell to hear it. I knew that I was supposed to feel absolutely icky walking out of the theater, but I had no idea I'd feel that way as soon as the film started: it begins in a dimly lit, grimy basement, where an unseen person begins torturing a kitten. Using a camcorder, this person transmits this awful footage to a live video feed on the Internet. The website--called killwithme.com--is soon up and running, and under mysterious circumstances, it comes to the attention of Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane), an FBI agent from Portland, Oregon specializing in Internet criminals. She's obviously disgusted by a website showing a tortured animal, but she has yet to learn what it means or even how...

Entertaining
This movie has lots of actions, tense, as you would expect from a cyber-movie. The main plot is about a psychotic man who uses his taser to get the people to his "dungeon" and display the torture online. I thought the plot was brilliant. The way he does his torture where the lights increases as the viewers increases which practically baked the victim; the use of chemical (forgot what it was) on the next person; and the voice changer so the psycho can lure his victim - I thought those were all unique and high-concept.

Now adays, though, Feds can easily trace the IP address. In this movie, they have difficulty tracing the IP address of the user. I'm sure that is why the title is Untraceable. The computer forensic folks are a lot savier now. It would have added more mystery if the audience does not know who the person behind the keyboard. That would have given them something to solve.

I laughed at the ending, though. When the heroin broke loose of her...

Excellent DVD extras
The DVD extras really make this 20th anniversary re-release worth owning. This movie has been run repeatedly (in edited form) on television, so there probably aren't that many people who haven't had a chance to see this delightful fantasy. The "making-of" video and the commentary track give a fascinating glimpse into the way that Hollywood works. Why did Disney wind up making this film? How did Tom Hanks get the lead? How did they choose Darryl Hannah? Who was the film's "real" star? How did they pull off the underwater shots? What was the lobster that Madison ate in the restaurant? If you have a soft spot for this film, it's a joy to watch and a real treat to get to know better.

Tom Hanks' Feature Film Debut
Tom Hanks had done a couple of TV shows and the producers of "Splash" really wanted a bigger name actor in their movie. Daryl Hannah had made a favorable impression in a bit part in "Blade Runner" but the big "name" in the announced cast of Splash was John Candy, who was probably paid as much as the rest of the cast combined in the role of brother Freddy.

It would have been very easy for the movie to become a broad farce with Candy and Eugene Levy in the love story of the man and the mermaid, but writers Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel found the right note between love story and comedy, and the cast pulls off both. The comedy varies between clever and slapstick, and seeing the film again 20 years later still made me laugh at parts. As expected, Candy and Levy do the heavy lifting in the comedy department, and they are both hilarious in their respective scenes. The whole movie wouldn't work at all, though, if we didn't believe in the central love story - and Hanks and...

Splash is a beautiful, romantic comedy.
Splash is a wonderful, romantic comedy about a man and a mermaid who fall in love for each other. This is one of Tom Hanks' earliest hits that made him a star. His co-star, Darryl Hannah, who plays Madison the mermaid, has never really had a hot film career away from this movie, sadly enough. The late John Candy and Eugene Levy provide some of the film's hilarious comedy as well. This film was directed by Ron Howard. A movie about a mermaid has to be good, and Splash does this so well. Tips off to the crew of this movie who made it so real. The underwater sequences are well done as well as Daryl Hannah herself as the mermaid. She is utterly believable as a mermaid! She is just so sexy in the rubber mermaid tail suit. She swims in it so well. This movie really brought a fairy tale type story to life. A must see for everyone. This film was followed by "Splash, Too", a Disney TV movie sequel in 1988 starring Todd Waring and Amy Yasbeck in the Hanks/Hannah roles...

The Diamond of the Day (Part Two)

Merlin series
I am in my late 70's and not too many fantasy programs can hold my interest for long, but Merlin does. I really enjoy it, especially the episodes with the dragons

Last episode was terrible!
Merlin as a whole deserves 5 stars. This review is only for the miserable last episode. I'm writing spoilers here, so don't read this until you've watched it all. What was wrong with this last episode? Everything. First of all, it's been the utmost important thing for Merlin to keep his magic a secret. We all waited for the glorious moment when Merlin would reveal who he was to Arthur. I expected it to happen in some sort of epic way. Nope. All of a sudden, for no epic reason at all, Merlin turns to Author and says "I've g..g..g..got Magic!" Huh? And he seems to say it because he believes Author will die, but then 5 seconds later he is convinced Arthur will live. C'mon, there were many dire situations in the past where Arthur's life was hanging by a thread, and yet Merlin didn't reveal to him who he was. Why now? Oh yeah, because it's the last episode! That's called author intrusion or "last episode intrusion". A story should never be forced a certain way just because it's the last...

Best Show Ever!
I have never loved a show as much as this one. The story line and the characters are just perfect. I am really going to miss watching this show when it ends with the final fifth season.

Crazy, Stupid, Love [HD]

The audience howled with laughter and recognition!
I thought this movie was fabulously funny and warm-hearted, poignant and tender, bitter and sweet. In other words, just like our real relationship(s) in life. Steve Carell was brilliant as the cuckolded husband who had to find his groove (again) after slipping into the humdrum of benign neglect, Ryan Gosling couldn't have been better in the role of the dazzling womanizer who surprised himself by falling in love, Julianne Moore nailed it as the wife who couldn't quite figure out what she wanted now that she'd up-ended everything and everyone. Every one of the youngsters in the film had such sweetness to them, and yet were so real, just like any kid of their various ages. Emma Stone was just the right balance of vulnerable woman and strong.

When we finally see how all the pieces of this seemingly random puzzle come together, it's brilliant. Couldn't be better, or more touching-while-funny. In fact, I was in a full theater of mostly 50's and 60's age adults, and the place...

A swing and a miss. A swing and a hit.
As comedies go, I think this is probably one of the better ones you will see this year.

Steve Carell plays Cal, a husband who splits from his high school sweetheart, played by Julianne Moore, after she cheats. Hanging out in single bars every nights he sees this ladies man played by Ryan Gosling successfully pick up numerous women, while he says out loud to anyone who will listen, 'my wife cheated on me with xxxx.'

Meanwhile his teenage son has the hots for his babysitter, while the babysitter crushes on Cal. We have 4 romantic triangles between the main characters, that are developed to great comic effect.

So, Ryan Gosling's character takes him under his wing, as his wing man, and shows him how to score with the ladies, which leads to many interesting twists and turns.

There were several parts of this movie that made me cringe, one was the patheticness of the character played by Steve Carell. The teenage crush made me cringe a little,...

A Romantic Comedy For Actual Adults? A Great Cast And A Smart Screenplay Make The Most Of The Genre
In theory and on paper, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" had the potential to be a disaster. It seems sometimes that studios have lost the ability to replicate anything resembling real life in the big budget fiascos that stand for romantic comedy these days. Do people really have to act like complete morons to find true love? How many uptight career women do we need to watch being tamed by adolescent and boorish men? While Dan Fogelman's screenplay certainly plays to the expected conventions, it is distinguished by a smart and genuine sense of humor that is grounded in identifiable and likable character types. It has a surprisingly hard edge which is quite refreshing. Incorporating adult themes, "Crazy, Stupid, Love" is a romantic comedy that you don't have to be embarrassed to like for it doesn't pander or insult your intelligence. Yes, it goes a little soft in the final act for my taste--but up to that point, the experience is rich, thoughtful and filled with laughs. And there are some...

Letting Go

letting go
Good, sad at times, but also made no sense at times. The dogs were the best part. So a good show for dog lovers.

Honest and relatable drama
This is a heartfelt and unique film about a guy, Joel, who's desperately seeking happiness and satisfaction in his life. His relationship is on the rocks, he struggles to find the balance between his career and his personal life, and on top of that he has three large and high maintenance dogs. I really enjoyed this film for its honesty and relatable material about coming to terms with life.
Source: criticnic.com 19 January 2013
Disclosure: Film sent by Osiris Entertainment

Worth The Watch Deeper Than It Seems
In Letting Go, we meet Joel played by Jake Torem who lives with his super crazy girlfriend April who although played by Shirley Brener, I can't not see Heather Graham's face.

Joel's life is coming apart. Between, his girlfriend, his three big dogs, his boss, his life, everything is insane and he thoughtfully seeks therapy. The therapist helps Joel break down the barrier that has been holding him back from being truly happy with his life.

Looking for something different check out Letting Go. I was surprised to see Peter Brady, I mean Christopher Knight and Bosom Buddy Peter Scolari; faces I haven't seen in forever.

The movie and acting, especially by Torem, is very well done and full of little side stories especially Joel's relationship with his parents, especially his father.

Tell It To The Marines

Famous Chaney vehicle with beautiful Robert Israel music.
Although Warner Home Video has decided to release its old titles in DVD-R format, at least we have the chance to have access to such interesting movies as Tell It to the Marines. This one is presented in a sensational copy with a beautiful orchestral score composed by Robert Israel. Filmed most of the movie on location, it has interest as documentary also, although the main attraction obviously, is to see Lon Chaney in a role that did not require any physical disguise, under George Hill's 'mise en scene', in the antipodes of Tod Browning's direction, responsable of Chaney's most famous movies. The structure of Tell It to the Marines is an atractive mix with the typical William Haines' vehicle elements, Lon Chaney's composition of a pathetical role, and action scenes where George Hill was an accomplished artisan. Eleanor Boardman provides the romantic interest, therefore you have the chance to see three big stars of the early MGM in a very entertaining movie. Enjoy it!

Groundbreaking Gem!!!!!!!
All the great films from Jack Webb's "The D.I." to Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket" owe a bow to this masterpiece. The first film to depict boot camp life in the U.S.M.C.
Many people won't even give silent films a chance. Heck, even a lot of today's teenagers won't even give a sound Black/White film a look. However, once you start watching this epic you cannot turn if off.
Chaney is brilliant as the D.I. a no nonsense character with a heart of gold (when he chooses to show it) and William Haynes is equally good as the recruit who Chaney attempts to mold into a fighting man. In the middle of the mix is the love interest of both, portrayed by Eleanor Boardman.
The battle scenes are phenomenal considering this was 1926.
And Chaney's D.I. "routine" 'Who wants to drive the General's car?' is a hoot!!!
The film is in pretty decent shape for its age with a decent transfer.
Warning: It is available only on DVD-R format, and may not play on some older...

Chaney's favorite film, and easy to see why
No matter how great Lon Chaney was as "The Hunchback Of Notre Dame" and "The Phantom Of The Opera", he in my opinion was born to play a Marine in this 1926 film. He is so believable and fits so well in the part, that is a natural for him. No makeup required here, and it is proof positive that he could play many other roles without all the makeup. You can see in this film how much he enjoyed playing in his role of the tough sergent with a heart. And for his role, he was the first actor granted to be an honorary member of The United States Marine Corps. And Chaney was highly honored indeed. William Haines is the man he takes under his wing, and Eleanor Boardman plays the nurse that the two of them are both in love with. The transfer here on this DVD-R is very good. Of course some wear and scratches remain, but overall the quality is very good. Nice stereo track by Robert Israel. Unfortunately no extras. But this is a must film for a Lon Chaney collection. I highly recommend this film.

6 Souls

A "THINKING MAN" THRILLER
6 held my interest, 6 had me wishing the movie wasn't already 1/2 way over, 6 made me scream out loud (always a good sign in my book) and 6 was a unique story (hasn't been done to death).

COMPARISON INFO: If you're looking for a slasher/blood & guts movie (which is great too!) you may want to bypass this film and find one more to your desire. If you're looking for a thought-provoking, try to figure-it-out film that has you guessing until the end - you'll enjoy 6 - it delivers. The story comes together well and it's a new story.

The actors did a convincing job - nice to see big name actors in horror films. I think this film was well worth the price and I would gladly rent it again without hesitation.

I got my $9.99 worth!
After reading some of the reviews, I was quite hesitant... however, I decided to watch; and I thought it was good. Julianne Moore never cease to amaze me with her acting skills and Jonathan Rhys Meyers was actually good in his character. I recommend this. I getting every cent out of my (LOL) 48 hour "see it before it hit the theaters" rental, because I plan to watch it again before it expires. The best part -- I didn't have to leave my house and I sat watching it in my PJs and enjoyed it!

Alas another disappointment
Here again is another movie that could've went in so many different directions but I seen it coming how this was gonna end and it stunk. I also learned that this movie is actually a renamed version of another. Shame on you Amazon if you lied about this coming to theaters. Too many loose ends of this story weren't tied up and too many details left out.. Wish I had read reviews first. Would've saved me 9.99. What a rip off. Julianne Moore did a good job with what she had to work with but it couldn't save this movie. I will never understand why some good actors/actresses choose the roles they do. I stayed up late to watch. Wish I had just gone to bed.

Drool

Nice Travel Down a Side Road
This is a quirky, left of center indy comedy. It centers on Anora, an Oklahoma housewife who lives in a dream world fantasizing over a perfect husband, perfect marriage and perfect family that is at odds with her reality. Her husband's a jerk, her marriage is a mockery and her kids are screwed up beyond all possible belief.

She gets a new neighbor, Imogene, who sells a Mary Kay type line of cosmetics. Imogene is upbeat, friendly and black which doesn't bode well with Anora's husband or kids. But she's the only person in Anora's life that pays her any attention and shows her any kindness. The two end up falling for each other and during a sexual interlude Anora's husband (drunk) comes in and goes bananas. He pulls a gun but things go wrong and he's the the one who ends up getting shot by Anora. The two women dump his body in the trunk of Imogene's car. Anora grabs her two kids and they all head to Savannah, where Imogene's boss lives, to dispose of the body. It's a shortish...

Cute and entertaining
Made on a budget, but was entertaining. I especially liked the thirteen year old boy who was a 'queen' in the making. Not a long movie, but was a pleasant way to spend a little over an hour.

a nice surprise
'Drool' was a good little film of its' type, an 'independent' and shot on a shoestring budget. Laura Harring has a certain sweetness as mousy, downtrodden and abused housewife Anora Fleece, Jill Marie Jones turns the rather formulaic sassy black woman into something a bit special, and Oded Fehr plays both the misogynistic racist wife beater, Cheb Fleece who is sexually abused by his male boss (but keeps it a dirty little secret) and the 'fantasy man' Anora dreams of. Credit where it's due,Fehr injects a subtle note of sympathy into the monstrous husband, and gives a nice little comedic flip to the hunky Harlequin hero. The actress who played 'Kathy K' did less well, largely because hers is another sassy black mama role, so all she could do was parody it. 'Drool' is a film that works on many levels, even though it is touted as a gay comedy, it's never preachy, the writing was good, and the idea of using illustrations to convey teen Tabitha's secret feelings was a neat twist. If the...

Hear No Evil

Speaking evil of "Hear no Evil"
This move isn't horrible, it isn't the worst movie I have ever seen but it left me feeling flat. While some would compare this to the classic "Wait Until Dark" it never comes close to the quality of that film.

The plot centers around the rarest coin in the world. Everyone wants it except for Marlee Matlin, inevitably, it ends up in her possession. This movie has the typical cop on the take, unknown reporter trying to make a name for himself, good guy drawn in by the damsel in distress, and best friend of the heroine along to show that this whole business is dangerous.

The characters are not well developed, and none really earned any sympathy from me. The bad guys were laughably bad (albeit with a taste for opera) and thuggy. even the main characters seemed to never be committed wholeheartedly to the events around them.

The ending might have been a real shocker to those who did not follow the movie closely at the beginning, but to the rest of us it was just...

MUTE POINT
Courageous Oscar winner Marlee Matlin (Children of a Lesser God) stars as a deaf mute who becomes embroiled in a devilish plot formulated by crooked cop Martin Sheen. She's in possession of a rare coin stolen at Sheen's bequest, and she doesn't know she's got it. Reporter John C. McGinley (dependable as always) hid the coin in her cell phone; his buddy D. B. Sweeney (in a useless Stephen Baldwin impersonation) is called on to help when it looks like Matlin is next on Sheen's hit list. While it's a sturdy thriller, its pace is sometimes static and slow, impeding any true suspense. The ending is fairly predictable and Matlin's attempts to pull an Audrey Hepburn Wait Until Dark admirable, but the movie collapses on itself.

great thriller suspense
marlee matlin is incredible! This movie keeps you on the edge. What an incredible Movie. I enjoy suspense thrillers and this is a good one.

A Taste of Romance

Surprisingly Charming
I was amazed that a film with such a simple plot could be so charming. The story is very engaging and the dialogue is well crafted. So many films seem these days to be produced on an assembly line with little quality control. Just get another teenage mentality film out. This film is truly fun to watch and reminds me of the film Return to Me.

A Taste Of Romance
I liked this movie a lot. It is worth buying. Saw it on the hallmark channel.I like Teri Polo in this movie.. It is a drama/romance.. Good story & acting! A very
enjoyable movie!

A Taste of Romance
I had seen this movie on the Hallmark station,LOVED IT so glad it is made into DVD coming out in JUNE

Mountain Men: Season 1

We need real back into reality...
Seriously? Can we stop the drama and get back to discovering what people who live in the mountains do to survive? Let's see the gardens, the process of putting food up, how to skin a beaver, what they do in the evenings, how do they relate to their families...not silly (looking much like contrived) situations. For example...with a cameraman present, it was doubtful Marty would freeze or dehydrate to death. Just way too hokey as it stands. Maybe season 2 will be better.

Major dramatic moments: Lost dog, late husband, kid who doesn't put tools away.
I was altogether disappointed with this series. Only about 20% of the camera-time is spent on interesting happenings, the other 80% is spent on filler air-time accompanied by desperate yet futile effort to make life seems dangerous, interesting, and dramatic. Yet when you've finished an episode, and reflect back on it - you swiftly realize that during that 30 minutes episode.... nothing actually happened.

Get Real!
This series is petty, juvenile and overly dramatic. Sure it is a tough life but let's be more realistic in the future
